We love a wide range of foods from ethnic dishes to down home soul food. Grilled to fried. Crockpot to Oven. Completely home grown to I-need-a-quick-easy-dinner meal.
A couple nights ago I need the latter. A quick easy takes-no-time meal.
Soo....Canned goods to the rescue!
As I looked through my stocked pantry I spied green beans and french friend onions and thought green bean casserole sounds REALLY good, but I wasn't about to make a multi-dish supper not to mention no mushroom soup in the pantry. Bummer.
And then I spied the bag of Mushroom Egg Spaetzle from Aldi! And man...I wanted that but again...not doing a multi-dish dinner!
And then there was the canned chicken! INSPIRATION!! And TA DA! Dinner happened!
If you are not familiar with Aldi, check them out. Low prices, good quality food and baby supplies! I'm addicted.
- Mushroom Egg Spaetzle from Aldi.
- Canned Chicken Brest
- Canned Green Beans
- French Fried Onions
Actually...the Canned Chicken Breast and French Fried Onions also were bought at Aldi! Though you can definitely buy the chicken, french fried onions, and green beans at any grocery store.
The instructions on the Spaetzel is to put 2 1/3 cups cold water in saucepan. Add contents and stir. Simmer approximately 12 minutes. So...I....
Placed 2 1/3 cups cold water in my cast iron pan since that is all I cook with pan-wise.
Added the Mushroom Egg Spaetzle.
Stirred well!!
Cooked approximately 12 minutes in my Lodge Cast Iron Pan! The only brand we buy or will use!
Canned chicken...not the most appealing ever but it works for a super easy meal!
Once spaetzle was cooked I added the chicken and green beans. I still had the stove on to help warm up the extra ingredients.
Starting to look yummy!!!
At this point I felt it needed a touch more sauce to make it creamier again so I added a dollop of Mayo. Maybe half a cup?
Since I had added so many extra items to this dish, I also felt it needed more seasonings. Though I should also say that I typically add extra seasonings to any dish I make so it's nothing against the package itself. I added paprika (reddish seasoning line), garlic powder (faint yellow seasoning line right of the paprika), and Himalayan salt, and fresh ground black pepper.
All stirred up! Doesn't that look delicious?
Sprinkle french friend onions on top!! Mmmmm!!!
I tossed it in the oven for 10-15 minutes to brown the french fried onions and make sure it was all heated through.
And it's ready!!! Doesn't that just make your taste buds sing!!!
Close up of all that deliciousness!!
And, of course, the obligatory food on plate picture once more! My little one even ate it without protest! One pan dish for the win!
Do you have a quick meal you use when short on time or energy? Do you grab things off your pantry shelf and throw dinner together? Or do you follow recipes only like I used to?I hope this post inspires you! Happy cooking!!
